Crankshaft Cross Drilling Alignment Fixture (71500)
Patent Pending

Install crankshaft in machine using V blocks as seen in illustration below. Check condition of V Blocks to prevent scratches in crankshaft. Leave V blocks loose around crankshaft for time being. Move lower pointer to lower position in frame assy. Install fixture into chuck of drilling machine and lower spindle allowing upper pointer to be placed directly above where you want oil hole entrance to be located.
Do not insert pointer into oil hole or let pointer or Frame Assembly touch
crankshaft.
Adjust lower pointer ( slide it up in frame assy. by hand ) until it is directly below where you want the hole to exit.  Adjustments can be made by rotating crankshaft in V blocks or moving table in X and Y axis. ( right –left – in – out ) Usually it requires a combination of all of these to adjust.  After adjustment is made tighten V blocks and lock table. You don’t want any thing to move.  Check alignment again for errors. Slide lower pointer to lower position allowing removal of fixture from machine. Take a minute and think
about the hole you are about to drill.

· Will it cause any problems.
· Will oil hole you are about to drill
intersect hollow crankshaft journals,
deep balancer bolt holes, pilot bushing
holes, or anything else.
· Will this configuration work.
· Do we need a second oil hole to
intersect oil supply.

Drilling Preparations
If you are starting a hole inside an oil hole which is usually the case, install end mill in chuck and spot face where you want the hole to start. Then install the center drill and drill a shallow hole enabling the drill bit to have a clean hole to start in without walking around. Do this very carefully. This is critical. If you hole does not start right it won’t end right.  If you are starting a hole in a crankshaft journal from scratch, as in firure Install fixture into machine and adjust as previous explained except.

While holding in hand, place center finder V gently on crankshaft journal while placing alignment edge against alignment fence. Adjust
until both are parallel and against each other.   See figure directly to the right.  After alignment use only the center drill to start hole before drilling. Center drill can be used to start hole and chamfer entrance hole in this application. Using end mills first is only used for entering slanting oil holes already in crankshafts.

When finished deburr holes as necessary.  A dremel grinder works very well to radius oil holes located down in existing oil hole. Check for scratches on journals ( V blocks ? ) and polish as necessary.
